Emiliano Valle MD-PhD Student
About Me
I am an MD-PhD student at Harvard Medical School (MD) and the University of Iowa (PhD) interested in the histories of medicine, public health, and imperialism in the Americas.
My work focuses on the history of health and health-related goods as they pertain to the Cuban embargo/blockade.
Why MD-PhD?
I graduated from Harvard College with an A.B. in Social Studies in 2016 and moved to Lima, Peru to work with Socios en Salud (a Partners in Health site). I then moved back to my hometown of Gainesville, FL and worked for the Pediatric Research Hub at the University of Florida before beginning medical school.
After I began my studies at Harvard Medical School, I soon realized that my research interests required methodologies and knowledge that I would not acquire in medical school. So, after finishing my major clinical year, I moved to Iowa City and began my doctoral studies under Professor Mariola Espinosa in the Department of History at the University of Iowa.
After completing the PhD, I will return to Boston to finish medical school and apply to residency programs. Ultimately, I hope to have a career that involves both medical practice and historical research.
Teaching and Tutoring
In 2022, I was awarded a Ford Foundation Pre-Dissertation Fellowship, allowing me to focus on research and coursework. In the future, I plan on teaching courses on topics including the histories of medicine and public health, histories of Latin America, and U.S. intervention in the western hemisphere.
I have years of experience tutoring a diverse set of topics including MCAT preparation, medical school applications, genetic analysis, AP biology, and macroeconomics. For tutoring inquiries, see contact info.
